In 2014, Larry and Wanda retired and later spent their time traveling to family and class reunions, weddings, vacation spots, and the traditional Barnes family Christmas dinner. She would often serve coffee in some of the many Ole Miss cups she received as mementos during her service to the School of Education. She loved to talk about her experiences educating students at the University of Mississippi. She and Larry often traveled together to Booneville, Tupelo, and Grenada where Wanda taught special education classes and Larry taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate classes for the School of Education at Ole Miss. Several of her students are now retired from careers they pursued with various local industries. Wanda was passionate about preparing her students for employment in a world that too often overlooked students with special restrictions and/or learning disabilities. She took her students to several places of employment where they observed how jobs are performed by skilled craftsmen and other types of employees in a variety of fields. While there, Wanda instructed her students how to dress when eating out on special occasions, and how a table should be set for meals. Wanda returned to Pascagoula and later spent 37 years teaching special education in Pascagoula and at Vancleave High School where she served as Department Chair. She went on to earn a master’s degree in special education at the College of William and Mary. Afterward, she attended Jackson State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education. Wanda attended Skip Street Elementary School and graduated from Carver High School in 1968. She was the twelfth child of twelve children.
